Climate Change

Our first spring trip of 2026 to set up water collection from our eavestroughs and I was hoping to see an iceberg but ice and fog filled the harbours.
I saw small clouds roll like tumble weeds in front of my car yesterday.

We were fortunate to catch our friend David before he moved from Fogo Island.
An invitation to his home for a send off was a beautiful social evening where reconnections and new connections were made.
The party featured meat filled pastries and chocolate cake from a newer business called Loaf Land.
Eleven years ago the Fogo Island Inn opened with a goal of improving the economy of Fogo Island through tourism. It’s been very successful and feeds profits back into the local economy through the for profit foundation, Shorefast.
Spin off has been in local businesses like short term rentals increasing and increased business for long standing business.
It has also created a climate for those who come to work at the Inn to sometimes see their own opportunities on Fogo Island.
I stopped into Loaf Land today and learned that the baker came originally as an Inn employee, started selling at markets and is now open 3 days a week in a location on Herring Cove Road in Shoal Bay.
I got amazing cheese sour dough that was still warm.

We did a great breakfast when Cod Jigger started serving at 10 am. A year round businesses with a great home cooked menu plus Greco pizza.

Tilting on Fogo Island has a history of artist residencies as does Shorefast now. A climate has been created that enabled the opening of a contempory art gallery a few years ago.
I visited today and the art avaliable at the moment is stunning.

I particularly enjoyed the works of Labrador artist David Merkuratsuk who I knew from a Facebook site from Labrador.

There are also works by Fogo based artist Bruce Pashak and others. It is a beautiful space to visit and shop if you are so fortunate.

I even got a peak of works by the next artist, from New Brunswick

I’m sure by my title you were thinking something else than cultural and economic climates but I also had weather on my mind. I went to Tilting to The Winds and Waves Artisan Guild and found myself a lovely crocheted hat amount their abundant inventory.

I haven’t blogged in a very long time so this one will stay short and sweet as I figure out a new app and wait for spring.
